چکیده

The sulfur cycle of Ebro Delta microbial mats was studied in order to determine sulfide production and sulfide consumption. Vertical distribution of two major functional groups involved in the sulfur cycle, anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria and dissimilatory sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), was also studied. The former reached up to 2.2x10(8) cfu cm(-3) sediment in the purple layer, and the latter reached about 1.8x10(5) SRB cm(-3) sediment in the black layer. From the changes in sulfide concentrations under light-dark cycles it can be inferred that the rate of H(2)S production was 6.2 micro mol H(2)S cm(-3) day(-1) at 2.6 mm, and 7.6 micro mol H(2)S cm(-3) day(-1) at 6 mm. Furthermore, sulfide consumption was also assessed, determining rates of 0.04, 0.13 and 0.005 mmol l(-1) of sulfide oxidized at depths of 2.6, 3 and 6 mm, respectively.

Distribution of phototrophic populations and primary production in a microbial mat from the Ebro Delta, Spain.

Microbial mats arising in the sand flats of the Ebro Delta (Tarragona, Spain) were investigated during the summer season, when the community was highly developed. These mats are composed of three pigmented layers of phototrophic organisms, an upper brown layer mainly composed of Lyngbya aestuarii and diatoms, an intermediate green layer of the cyanobacterium Microcoleus chthonoplastes, and an u...

Phylogenetic diversity and temporal variation in the Spirochaeta populations from two Mediterranean microbial mats.

Spirochetes are among the bacterial groups often observed in hydrogen-sulfide-rich layers of coastal microbial mats. However, relatively few spirochetes from these microbial mats have been described and characterized. We used 16S rDNA phylogenetic analysis to investigate the spirochetal diversity of microbial mats from two locations in the western Mediterranean (Ebro Delta, Spain, and Camargue,...

Mineralogical composition and biomass studies of the microbial mats sediments from the Ebro Delta, Spain.

The mineral composition of the microbial mats at La Banya spit was studied. The spit is formed by a narrow sand bar and a peninsula and is located south of the main body of the Ebro Delta (Tarragona, Spain). Although quartz was the predominant mineral component in all sampling sites, clay, feldspars, calcite, aragonite, halite, dolomite and gypsum were also found. An increase in both the fine m...

Cosmopolitan distribution of the large composite microbial mat spirochete, Spirosymplokos deltaeiberi.

Inocula from organic-rich black muds immediately underlying intertidal laminated microbial mats dominated by Microcoleus chthonoplastes yielded large, variable diameter spirochetes. These unusual spirochetes, previously reported only from the Alfacs Peninsula at the delta of the Ebro river in northeast Spain, contain striking arrays of cytoplasmic granules packed into their protoplasmic cylinde...

The responses of photosynthesis and oxygen consumption to short-term changes in temperature and irradiance in a cyanobacterial mat (Ebro Delta, Spain).

We have evaluated the effects of short-term changes in incident irradiance and temperature on oxygenic photosynthesis and oxygen consumption in a hypersaline cyanobacterial mat from the Ebro Delta, Spain, in which Microcoleus chthonoplastes was the dominant phototrophic organism. The mat was incubated in the laboratory at 15, 20, 25 and 30 degrees C at incident irradiances ranging from 0 to 1,0...
